Newsies is coming to Popejoy June 21-26, 2016, and in preparation Popejoy Presents and Theatre Lovers Community offer an exciting and informative show about the Broadway hit. Popejoy tickets are available at www.unmtickets.com, 505-925-5858 or 877-664-8661, or at Albertson's in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, and Santa Fe. www.popejoypresents.com.

Terry Daviswill preview the upcoming musical Newsies, providing a deeper context for the show. Newsies is set in 1899 during the newspaper delivery strike that began in New York City and spread to other cities on the East Coast before a resolution was reached two weeks later. The strike by the newsboys sparked an interest in child labor issues and gave rise to, among other figures, Mother Jones, who rallied national interest in the plight of children working long hours in often dangerous jobs for little pay. Davis will discuss the musical itself, it’s social and historical context, briefly cover the career of composer Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin), and compare Newsies to other musicals that feature historical or social topics.

Terry Davis is Popejoy’s Marketing Manager and has given Theatre Lovers Community insight into many of Popejoy’s Broadway presentations. He is an accomplished director (for Musical Theatre Southwest, Albuquerque Little Theatre, and more) and holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing from UNM.
